Saying goodbye to your pediatrician can be tough. You’ve built trust, they know your medical history, and visits feel familiar. But as you get older, your healthcare needs change, and it’s time to find a doctor who can support you in this next stage of life.

What type of doctor should I choose?

Choosing a new doctor can feel confusing—there are different specialties, and it’s not always clear which one is the right fit. The good news is that all primary care doctors are focused on keeping you healthy, preventing illness, and treating common medical concerns. The best choice depends on your needs, your insurance provider, and what makes you feel comfortable. Here are the main options:

    • Family medicine providers—Care for patients of all ages, including young adults. They focus on preventive care, chronic conditions, and overall wellness.
    • Internal medicine providers—Specialize in adult health and managing complex or chronic conditions.
    • DOs (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine)—Like MDs, DOs provide complete medical care but with additional training in a holistic, whole-body approach to health.

Choose the right doctor for you

Finding the right doctor is about more than just medical care—it’s about trust, communication, and feeling supported in your health. Look for a doctor who:

  • Respects you and makes you feel comfortable in every conversation.
  • Listens to your concerns and values your input about your health.
  • Encourages you to ask questions and be involved in your care.
  • Explains things in ways you understand so you feel informed.
  • Understand your culture and language so you feel heard and valued.
  • Is covered by your insurance plan or offers affordable options if you don’t have insurance.
