What is included in a well-woman exam?

A well-woman exam, also called a women’s wellness exam, is a full check-up that focuses on your reproductive health and overall well-being. What happens during the exam may depend on your age and medical history, but it usually includes the following important screenings and assessments. It’s also a great opportunity to talk with your doctor about any questions or concerns you have about your health.

    Gynecological exam

A gynecological exam is a regular health check-up focusing on a woman’s reproductive system. During the exam, the doctor will check the pelvic area, do a Pap smear (a test to check for cervical cancer), and talk about things like periods, birth control, or any health concerns. These exams help find and prevent health problems and keep you healthy.

    Blood test

Blood work during a women’s wellness exam involves taking a small sample of blood to check for different health markers. These tests can look at cholesterol levels, blood sugar, hormones, vitamins, or signs of infection. Depending on your health history and any concerns, blood work may also check for conditions like anemia, thyroid problems, or other health issues. It’s an important way to keep track of your health and prevent future problems.

    Breast exam

A breast exam is a check-up done by a healthcare provider to check the health of a woman’s breasts. The provider looks at and gently feels the breast tissue and underarm area to find any lumps, changes, or unusual signs. Breast exams are usually part of regular women’s health check-ups and can help find early signs of breast cancer or other problems. Getting regular exams and being aware of changes in your breasts are important for staying healthy.
