Board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Fernandes received her medical degree from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso, TX, in 2015, as the recipient of a full scholarship. She completed her pediatric residency there in 2018. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Houston, Honors College, Houston.
Before joining the Airline center staff, Dr. Fernandes was a pediatrician in Marshall, TX.
A heart for pediatrics
Dr. Fernandes loves working with children, and she has always wanted to be a pediatrician. She grew up watching her pediatric nurse mom take care of kids and, from an early age, saw herself doing the same. Even in college, she found time to volunteer at Texas Children’s Hospital. She shadowed at the local children’s hospital in medical school, which helped her realize that she is happiest when working with children.
We are fortunate to have Dr. Fernandes on the pediatric staff at Airline Children & Women’s Health Centers. Her passion for pediatrics, ability to educate parents, and commitment to community health care are a perfect fit.
At Airline, Dr. Fernandes provides general and preventative pediatric evaluation and management, including well-check exams and sick visits to children from birth through age 17. Treatment of asthma, diabetes, and psychiatric evaluation and medication management of ADHD, anxiety, and depression are areas in which she has specialized experience.
Providing information and tools to parents
Equipping parents with the knowledge and tools they can use to prevent illness and keep their children healthy is a priority for Dr. Fernandes. She encourages all questions, emphasizing that there is no such thing as a dumb question.
As a parent, she knows that it’s not easy to remember everything a doctor says during a visit, so she makes a point to provide written information that parents can review at home.
A lot of times, parents are misinformed, or they don’t have the information they need about common issues. Even a little thing like knowing how to use nasal saline and a suction bulb for a baby with a cold can make a big difference.”
A pediatrician who speaks English, Spanish, Hindi, and Konkani
Many people assume that Dr. Fernandes is a native Spanish speaker. She does speak Spanish, but she is originally from India, and her name is of Portuguese origin. In addition to Spanish, Dr. Fernandes is fluent in Hindi, Konkani, and English.
